The story of Tu Hieu Pagoda began in 1843 as a humble thatched-roof shrine named An Dưỡng Am, founded by Venerable Nhất Định. According to historical legend, Venerable Nhất Định lived here with his elderly, frail mother.

When his mother fell dangerously ill, the monk set aside public judgment and strict monastic vegetarian rules to trek down the mountain daily to buy fresh fish and prepare nourishing soup for her recovery. Touched by such selflessness, Emperor Tự Đức later granted royal funds in 1848 to expand the shrine into a grand temple. The Emperor personally named it “Từ Hiếu”—where “Từ” symbolizes compassion and “Hiếu” represents filial piety.

Tu Hieu Pagoda gained global prominence as the birthplace of Plum Village Zen Buddhism. Zen Master Thích Nhất Hạnh entered the monastery as a novice monk in 1942 at the age of 16. After decades of promoting peace, mindfulness, and Engaged Buddhism around the world, he returned to Tu Hieu in 2018 to reside until his passing in January 2022. Today, his legacy of living in the present moment lives on through the active resident monks and nuns.
